5th MARATHON VUKOVAR – ILOK was held, in a memory on 23rd of September, 1991 the day when the legendary 204th brigade was established.
198 contestants participated in 22 crews of eights. Crews of cities Zadar (storm), Karlovac (exams) and Faculty of traffic (the index affaire) resigned a day before the start. The water level of Danube was low, but the coxwains didn't have any problems with it. They skillfully avoided the shallow parts of Danube and nattily rowed in to the Ilok's beach.
THE CITY OF KAŠTEL'S eight performed a real stunt. They started twenty minutes behind the cargo ship, the so called pusher, went around it, which is not common, because the pusher went through the Danube very fast. It is no wonder that people from Kašteli won the pusher, because their eight named KAŠTEL KAMBELOVAC has flown the Danube since the first Marathon Vukovar – Ilok, but from now on, it is paddled by female and male rowers from Kaštel Kambelovac.
Rowing MARATHON VUKOVAR – ILOK, is in it's fifth year of rowing accomplishing its goals and wishes of organizers, HVK VUKOVAR; to keep the tradition of event REGATTAS in Vukovar, to remind old Vukovar folks on rowing competitions held in our city, and meet the new ones with our sport. By gathering and socializing of all rowing devotees, starting with families, amateurs, students and friends to the top female and male rowers, we want to promote competition and amateur rowing and tradition of life next to Danube / sports, fishing, excursions / and meet our guests with cultural heritage, wine and gastronomy offer of the eastern Slavonija, especially Vukovar and Ilok.
We started this rowing story on 30th of September 2004, in a memory of our killed and missing members, who actively participated in the defence of the city of Vukovar and sovereignity of Republic of Croatia, when 8 veteran eights from Republic of Croatia participated.
Nine rowing clubs: IKTUS – Osijek, ISTRA – Pula, CROATIA – Zagreb, JARUN – Zagreb, MLADOST – Zagreb, NOVA – Zagreb, TREŠNJEVKA – Zagreb, ZAGREB – Zagreb, VUKOVAR – Vukovar and 24 rowers are participants of all the five Marathons Vukovar – Ilok, and 83 female and male rowers paddled their first MARATHON.
The eight crews from Izola (SLO) and Mohacsa (HUN), are giving the MARATHON an international character.
THE 6th ROWING MARATHON VUKOVAR – ILOK starts on 3rd of November 2009.

Oliver Martinov, along with Ivan Jukić, Silvija Petriška, Danijel Bajlo, Petra Milina, Tihomir Jarnjević and Nikša Mardešić, is the seventh Croatian olympian on rowing MARATHON VUKOVAR – ILOK.
